Odoo Community vs Enterprise: What the Difference Actually Is
Odoo Community is the free and open-source edition of Odoo ERP, available to download, install, and use with no license fee. Odoo Enterprise is the paid subscription edition that adds proprietary modules, Odoo Support, and additional hosting options on top of the Community codebase.
Enterprise is not a replacement for Community; it is built on top of it. Custom Python modules work on both editions when self-hosted, so a manufacturer on Community can add compliance modules (FSMA 204, AS9100, METRC) but cannot use enterprise-only modules such as Odoo Quality, Odoo PLM, or Odoo WMS Barcode without upgrading. If you are new to the platform, start with what Odoo ERP is.
| Community | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| License cost | Free | Per user, per month, billed annually |
| Source code | Open source | Community code plus proprietary modules |
| Odoo support | None (community or partner) | Included |
| Custom Python modules | Yes, self-hosted | Yes, on Odoo.sh or on-premises, not on Odoo Online |
| Quality, PLM, WMS Barcode | Not available | Included |
| Advanced Manufacturing (OEE, workcenter performance) | Not available | Included |
| Hosting | Self-hosted only | Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or on-premises |
Enterprise-Only Modules That Matter for Manufacturers
The Enterprise modules below are the ones most relevant to manufacturers and unavailable in Community. Whether you need all of them depends on production type, compliance requirements, and warehouse execution volume.
Generic Odoo Enterprise vs Community comparisons cover dozens of apps. This section covers only the ones that change a manufacturing decision.
Odoo Manufacturing: advanced features
Community includes the base manufacturing module: bills of materials, work orders, and production scheduling. Enterprise adds OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) tracking from work order data, workcenter performance reporting, and shop floor tablet interface enhancements.
You need Enterprise here if you want OEE reporting, workcenter performance visibility, or the full operator interface on the floor. A manufacturer running simple discrete production with basic BOM tracking may find Community's Manufacturing module sufficient.
Odoo Quality
Odoo Quality is not available in Community. It covers quality control points at receiving and production routing steps, quality alerts with escalation workflows, nonconformance reporting, and CAPA workflow.
Food manufacturers who inspect at receiving events, AS9100 aerospace manufacturers who need control points in production routing, and pharmaceutical manufacturers with in-process quality requirements all need it. Without Odoo Quality, quality checks live outside Odoo or in custom-developed modules.
Odoo PLM
Odoo PLM covers engineering change requests and orders (ECR/ECO), BOM version control with approval chains, and CAD file storage linked to product records.
Discrete manufacturers with active engineering change workflows and AS9100-regulated manufacturers who need formal design control documentation should plan for it. Manufacturers with stable, unchanging BOMs may never need PLM.
Odoo WMS Barcode
Odoo WMS Barcode adds scan-based receiving, directed putaway, directed picking, pack-and-ship confirmation, and cycle counting to the standard Odoo Inventory module. Every scan writes directly to Odoo Inventory, with no separate WMS database.
Any manufacturer operating a physical warehouse with barcode scanning requirements needs it. Without it, receiving and picking run through the standard inventory interface with no directed operations. Where lot-tracking compliance applies (FSMA 204, AS9100), scan-based operations are not optional.
A note on Odoo Maintenance
Preventive and corrective maintenance scheduling and equipment tracking are available in the Community codebase.
Enterprise's value for maintenance is its tighter connection to workcenter OEE and downtime reporting in manufacturing. Manufacturers who track maintenance outside Odoo need neither.
The short version for manufacturers
A mid-market manufacturer with lot tracking, physical warehouse operations, and quality requirements needs Odoo Enterprise. Quality, WMS Barcode, and the full Manufacturing module are enterprise-only, with no Community substitute.
A manufacturer with simple discrete production, no warehouse scanning, and no compliance quality requirements can run its core manufacturing workflow on Community. For the warehouse execution side, see custom WMS development.
When Odoo Community Is Sufficient for a Manufacturer
Community is free and fully capable for manufacturing operations that do not need the enterprise-only modules above. It is not a demo. It is the same codebase Enterprise builds on, with the proprietary modules removed. For teams that value code ownership it is a credible Odoo open-source ERP option, and it is why many manufacturers with in-house developers start here.
- Production is discrete with stable BOMs, and no OEE or workcenter performance reporting is required
- Quality management happens outside Odoo or through a basic custom module
- Warehouse operations run through Inventory's standard interface with no barcode scanning
- Engineering changes are managed outside Odoo
- The manufacturer has in-house Odoo developers to maintain the installation and build custom modules
- Scan-based receiving and picking are required, because WMS Barcode is enterprise-only
- Quality control points at receiving or routing are required, because Odoo Quality is enterprise-only
- FSMA 204, AS9100, or pharmaceutical compliance modules must be deployed. These are custom Python modules that run on both editions, but the execution features they extend (WMS Barcode, Quality) require Enterprise
- You need a support contract from Odoo itself
Compliance modules are custom Python work either way. See Odoo ERP development.
Odoo Enterprise Pricing for Manufacturers
Odoo Community has no license fee. Odoo Enterprise is priced per user per month, billed annually, and varies by plan, user count, and country. Odoo adjusts these rates regularly, so confirm a current dated US quote before budgeting.
- Includes all apps.
- Hosted on Odoo Online only.
- No custom modules.
- Adds Odoo Studio, multi-company, and external API access.
- Choice of Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or on-premises.
- Required for any custom Python module deployment.
That maps to three deployment options
- Odoo Online (SaaS): available on both plans. Odoo Online does not allow custom Python modules, so manufacturers needing FSMA 204, AS9100, METRC, or Part 11 modules cannot deploy them here.
- Odoo.sh (PaaS): requires the Custom plan, with hosting billed separately. It allows full custom Python module deployment on Odoo-managed infrastructure, the middle option between online and on-premises.
- On-premises: also requires the Custom plan. You download Enterprise and host it yourself, with full custom development and unrestricted hosting. This is the route for ITAR manufacturers and operations with data sovereignty requirements.
Odoo's per-user fee also excludes implementation, expert services, and maintenance of custom code. Typical project costs on top of licensing:
Implementation
$40,000 to $90,000 for a standard 5 to 7 module mid-market deployment
Custom compliance modules
$25,000 to $80,000 per module (FSMA 204, AS9100, pharmaceutical, cannabis)
Integrations
$15,000 to $60,000 per external system
AI middleware
$50,000 to $120,000 for ML demand forecasting, anomaly detection, and agentic automation at go-live

Which Edition: A Decision Framework for Manufacturers
For a manufacturer, the decision reduces to three questions. Does the operation require scan-based warehouse execution? Does it require quality control points at receiving or production routing? Does it need Odoo's support contract or Odoo.sh hosting? If all three answers are no, Community deserves a serious look before you commit to Enterprise licensing.
- Scan-based receiving and picking are required (WMS Barcode)
- Quality control at receiving or production steps is required (Odoo Quality)
- OEE tracking and workcenter performance reporting are needed
- Engineering change management with BOM version control is required (PLM)
- Compliance modules will extend enterprise-only features, such as FSMA 204 KDE capture at the WMS barcode scan event
- You want Odoo Support
- Production is simple and discrete with no OEE requirement
- Quality management happens outside Odoo
- Warehouse operations use the standard inventory interface with no scanners
- You have or will hire in-house Odoo Python developers
- Custom compliance modules are needed but do not depend on enterprise-only features
Our assessment
Most mid-market manufacturers with a production facility, warehouse operations, and any compliance requirement land on Enterprise. WMS Barcode alone, required for scan-based receiving and lot-tracking enforcement, makes it necessary.
Community fits distributors with simpler inventory needs, and manufacturers in early ERP evaluation who want to test Odoo before paying for licenses. For help deciding, see Odoo implementation services.
