AI may process data in milliseconds, but it lacks the intuition of a seasoned doctor, the compassion of a crisis counselor, or the foresight of a policymaker. That’s why human-in-the-loop (HITL) systems are becoming essential.
At SAS Innovate 2025, the SAS Viya platform introduced a new feature that helps organizations like government agencies keep track of how their AI models make decisions over time.
For example, if an AI suggests approving a mortgage or denying disability benefits, experts can now see how that decision was made, what data was used, and how the model has changed. This makes it easier for humans to understand the AI’s logic, check if it’s right, and step in to change the decision if needed.
80% of public sector AI deployments now include HITL architecture, up from just 30% in 2022 .
This shift is more than technical; its profoundly human. It acknowledges that data alone isn’t knowl edge, and AI without empathy can become dangerously efficient.
